And more border progress. There was an awful lot of over-ones, but they’re now done.

Castle Sampler border progress Tuesday, Sep 25 2007

Here’s my border progress. I am very curious and hurrying to work on it to satisfy my curiosity. *g*

Some things of note.

All the colors are coming out much darker than on the reference photo. I also noticed on some people’s photos the design  has lighter colors than mine. For example on this one

http://image24.webshots.com/25/7/28/90/36572890uEnJfj_ph.jpg

But my result will rather look like this

http://image07.webshots.com/7/8/24/1/106582401IEpdEQ_ph.jpg

Quite a difference! I suppose the only reason is the lighter version is coming from the kit and there the colors are different than in the book. I like the way my colors are coming out by now, as the other version looks too yellowish. (that means I am lucky to have this version).

The over-one areas: I really enjoy working over-one (it’s not my first time but in the past I was doing it with a bit different technique). But I’d say that it does have some negative sides. You put the same amount of work and it takes the same amount of time to do full crosses over-one, but the result is a # of times smaller and less visible (or often almost invisible). Close colors placed together are almost non-distinguishable. The big letters look very good, but the tiny ornaments are IMO not worth to apply all the color changes the chart is calling for. Over-one is most suitable for detailed body parts like faces, hands and occasionally for some decoration ornaments.

The Sun Friday, Sep 14 2007

has eyes. It’s so expressive that I have a bit creepy and eerie feeling. Almost like looking at an ancient manuscript.

Knotwork bookmark Monday, Aug 27 2007

Това е серия книгоразделители с келтски “възлови” орнаменти, от Тереза Вентзлер.
http://twdesignworks.com/TWDW/bookmarks1_l.html

Шие се само на лен или evenweave, тъй като има 1/4 бодове. Въпреки че моделите изглеждат сравнително прости, се шие трудно докато се свикне с многото броене и прескачане. Смятам да комбинирам няколко модела в една картина.

I started one of TW’s Knotwork bookmarks. I was somewhat surprised that the stitching goes not so easily as I thought. There’s a lot of counting because of the many 1/4’s. Still it is going relatively fast. After some pondering I think I might stitch all 6 bookmarks on one piece of fabric, or at least place more than one on it.

I seem to be in a mood, and the carpet was done in just a few days time. But I think this happened because I saw that the carpet is not really the most annoying part of the design - there’s more and bigger than it. :P

Generally one has to get in a mood with this kind of designs and “adjust” himself to them, then even the long plain-colored areas are not so difficult and slow-going as they can be without the attitude.

* But there is also this one

which if I decide to do someday, I will pay someone to finish the background. (Which won’t be difficult as there are plenty of candidates.) Looks like many of their designs are of the type with backgrounds - no wonder, as they are reproductions of various classical paintings.

And then another Artime teaser Monday, Jul 2 2007

in the face of some more CM progress.

The new addition is King’s green robe on the right and some carpet. The next page to the right will be the middle page of the design and contain the Queen and most of the carpet areas. That said I am moving only to the right of the design, as per my plan.

Rose Tree at 55% Monday, Apr 2 2007

Or at least this is how I would estimate it, of course subjectively. I did some rose backstitching to “exercise” the color change; otherwise backstitching is left to be done last. This design clearly has an Art Nouveau feel.

(clicky of course)

Speaking about this style, I also very much enjoy stained glass-themed designs (and stained glass itself). In the past I experimented with some stained glass images and made them into patterns. Judging by the result it was successful but then yours truly was too lazy to actually stitch this result. (the patterns were too simplistic for my “will actually stitch it” taste). I would do this, if of course made into pattern and a quality one.

On a side note found some cat designs while looking for more Art Nouveau. My cat type is there, although “Octopussy” is not something I would name a thing as.

Rose tree in bloom progress part 4 Sunday, Mar 11 2007

(cross-posted to Solarium Sublime needlework forum)

I am quite behind my schedule with it, but still it moves along well. The part that did not went into the scanner is a completed upper left border (at the top), so now I am moving to filling the middle areas - flowers. This is the third page and it will take more time because it’s bigger than the previous two. In terms of upkeeping interest, I am really looking forward to working on the flowers because the repetitions of the border for the 3-rd time already make me a bit bored.

On the good news front, Teresa Wentzler  announced a future release of more designs at PatternsOnline, the designs from Best of Sampler Collection book. I am really anticipating this, as some of the designs are in my “mandratory to stitch” list. If they’re available at PatternsOnline the “someday” may easily change into “next one to stitch” for me :)

Backstitches Tuesday, Feb 20 2007

Here is a larger scan of the completed backstitch on the gold and some green areas of the first page (the first page is fully completed as well). I did change the whole backstitch color on gold to a darker shade. As there is no lighter shade of brown to compare conclusions might be difficult but imagine this backstitch a bit lighter and a bit more pale than it is now. I think the current variant is better. I will experiment with changing the backstitch of the flowers as well.

SBQ:

Do you like to buy “chartpacks” that include charms, buttons, and/or
beads or do you prefer to gather all materials yourself?

There are currently no chartpacks in shops over here, but even if there were I prefer to gather this stuff myself. Firstly it’s more interesting, secondly there’s a lot of places where you can hunt for various beads and charms and third, you can employ a lot of creativity and make it even nicer than initially suggested in the chart.

Rose Tree progress 2 and experiments Saturday, Feb 17 2007

There would be more progress if there was more time. Still, the colors and shades are already beginning to show. This design, if looked at each section separatedly would not seem so colorful (esp. the middle part), yet if looked at as a whole, gives a very interesting, bright, even cheerful vibe. I think the yellows and deep shades of blues are the reason for this.

I thought to maybe replace the backstitch color for yellow areas with something more darker (you can see a darker brown line at the bottom of the knot, which line is my experiment.) But I am yet undecided and will experiment further when I get to the backstitching part.

And more TW-related musings.
