Random acts of design admiration Sunday, Mar 18 2007

Random acts of design admiration (RADA) /self-invented abbreviation just a couple of seconds ago/.

Saw Woodland Faerie design while googling for something. I’ve seen it before of course; it comes that few people have actually stitched it (minding that this conclusion is based only on photos posted on the net). When looking closer at it, every time I feel “satisfaction brought by needlework art“. It’s unlikely that I’ll stitch it soon as it looks quite complicated. Until then (until I begin to post my own WIP photos of it) you can drool over pictures like this.

SBQ Friday, Mar 16 2007

Today’s SBQ was suggested Danielle (http://scopist. blogspot. com/) and is:

If you had $500 to spend on stitching-related items, what would you buy?

My, what a question! This is quite of money over here, what to say to spend everything of it on stitching.  Anyway, lets imagine…

1. A lap frame, which will probably solve my “huge project handling” issue

2. Charts - in particular as many TW charts from my want list as possible. Considering that they’re really many, think that we already spent at least half of the money. Fabric for each of them. Some Janlynn kits or Stoney Creek magazines if there’s space left.

3. Threads drawer. Tall, wooden and most probably custom ordered.  I’m not buying threads because I buy them only when I need them for a particular project.

I think that’s it…Can’t estimate so generally but seems that this $500 can go pretty easily, no matter how high is their currency value. But the conclusion: I always know what I want.

Rose tree in bloom progress part 4 Sunday, Mar 11 2007

(cross-posted to Solarium Sublime needlework forum)

I am quite behind my schedule with it, but still it moves along well. The part that did not went into the scanner is a completed upper left border (at the top), so now I am moving to filling the middle areas - flowers. This is the third page and it will take more time because it’s bigger than the previous two. In terms of upkeeping interest, I am really looking forward to working on the flowers because the repetitions of the border for the 3-rd time already make me a bit bored.

On the good news front, Teresa Wentzler  announced a future release of more designs at PatternsOnline, the designs from Best of Sampler Collection book. I am really anticipating this, as some of the designs are in my “mandratory to stitch” list. If they’re available at PatternsOnline the “someday” may easily change into “next one to stitch” for me :)

SBQ’s Thursday, Mar 8 2007

I seem to have missed a few SBQ’s, judging by them arriving in my inbox and left undeleted (aka unanswered).

- What is the smallest count fabric you have ever used? Did you stitch
over one? Conversely, what is the largest count fabric you have ever used?
I can’t brag about being a “small count-holic” because the smallest one is 18 (Aida). There were times when I managed on it quite well but now am finding the holes too small for my eyes. I did stitch over one - on Aida :P The largest count I ever used was Aida 11 and it was awful.

- Do you find yourself stitching faster when you are getting to the end
of a design?
By all means. “Darn. Just a little bit more left…hands ache. Persistence, here it comes…comes……whola, baby delivered! Pffff.” I recall I did the whole backstitching of The Castle in one evening. LOL.

- Do you use your needle, a seam ripper, or something else when you have
to frog stitches? Why do you use the method that you do?

I have a very handy seam ripper. Why use the needle and scissors, risking to cut the fabric, when you can have a secure cutting and ripping tool in one place.

The question influenced me to do some googling and it resulted in window-shopping: Handcrafted needlework tools.

Today husband, for the first time in many years, brought me flowers. I was thrilled.

Happy Woman’s day! :)
